ZK2020 Designer Showcase!

Shaina Scott

Links to Showcase videos added 7/1/20

Hello!

Today is the Designer Showcase for the Zombieknitpocalypse virtual retreat, #zk2020athome, and you're invited! šŸ˜†ā

Over the last 3 years of attending this event I've met so many wonderful friends including lots of amazing designers who have been so inspiring and supportive as I've grown my own business. The designer showcase features many of my favorite people & some who I'm just getting to know (& love) better this year thanks to the zoom room sessions.ā

Normally this would be an event where we're all in a room together with our current favorite designs on display. It's a whirlwind couple of hours talking with retreat attendees & answering questions about construction methods or yarns used. Super fun, but I since I'm a participating designer I never have enough time to also scope out what my designer friends have brought & displayed.ā

This year though @jknitma & @justrunknit are hosting the showcase across IG lives and zoom rooms to feature a different designer each hour & it's open to the public!ā  I've added links to the featured designers' pattern stores, a small bio of each designer. (And as of 6/30/20, links to their replay videos where possible along with a little enabling-peek at the patterns I purchased.)

I'm starting things off at 9 am CST Friday on my Instagram account, then we'll hop around to the other designers throughout the day.ā  Each designer gets to feature their designs however they choose so I'm really excited to see what everyone does (& to see all the new patterns)!ā

Follow @stockinettezombiesfor more details or visit their site for a full schedule. See you there!ā

Happy knitting!

Shaina ^_^

PS: Thank you so much Megan & Amy for hosting/organizing this awesome event!

If you're not registered for ZK, there are still a lot of fun events open to the public happening today & Saturday that you're welcome to attend. See zombieknitpocalypse.com for all the details on the Designer Showcase today and The Marketplace on Saturday. (You won't want to miss either, these are easily some of my favorite parts of the event each year!)

Thank you to Megan (@justrunknit) for letting me use your Designer Showcase image, it's perfect! šŸ’•

Shaina Scott (Me!)

Ravelry Name:

Designer Bio:

Iā€™ve always been a lover of beautiful yarn, even before I knew what to do with it. Since I started knitting and crocheting in 2007 my stash has grown tremendously and all that yarny goodness is what sparks the creativity in my designs which are published in the YumiYarns pattern line, through Knitpicks, Love Crafts and in Knitterā€™s Magazine. I believe that crafters can bring tons of positivity to the world, so 10% of all Yumi Yarns pattern sales go to fund clean water projects through charity:water.

Yumi Yarns knitting patterns are designs geared towards process knitters who also want beautiful and fun finished objects. Most patterns are paired with photo tutorials and learning resources via YumiYarns.com to help you painlessly grow your crafting skills and encourage you to keep trying new techniques. Letā€™s cast-on something happy!

Shana S. Cohen

Ravelry Name:

Pattern Store:

Designer Bio:

I am an architect with experience teaching technical and design studio courses in several higher education venues. I bring my experience of geometry and writing design syllabi to my pattern writing. My patterns are mostly modular designs, and mostly garter stitch! In pattern writing, I strive to make legible directions that allow the knitter to customize their own work in the process. I try to pay attention to maximizing yardage and adaptability of styling in my work. Throughout all of my endeavors, I love connecting with individuals, helping them to become the best version of themselves. I aim to write my patterns in a way to foster this creative expression in you, the knitter. I hope you have fun playing with color and style when working my patterns.

There isn't a video of Shana's showcase (it was really great, you should have been there) but this is the aftermath & a few fun stills of the Zoom event:

Julia began designing clothes and toys for her kids when they were small. As they grew they asked for more interesting and unique items that have morphed into a portfolio of older kid and adult friendly items. Julia is based in Easton, PA with her husband and three children. She is a self-taught fiber enthusiast who has knit almost every day for the past 15+ years. When sheā€™s not knitting in the ā€œmom-taxiā€ or crafting at home, she is teaching at her LYS. You can find her patterns on Ravelry as WeeSheepKnits.

Julia has shared a replay of her live Zoom event on her Instagram account but has a private account so I can't share the video link here. Request to follow her on IG if you're interested in watching her fun video & hearing the stories behind the designs.

Lisa K. Ross

Ravelry Name:

Designer Bio:

I am a knitwear designer living in Bloomington, Indiana, with my husband and our four boys. To me, knitting is a magical adventure in which two pointy sticks can turn lengths of fiber into clothing. There are countless techniques that, when combined with the perfect yarn, can create something incredible. My mission is to find these combinations and share them with the world. I strive to write patterns that are clear and concise and can help you learn new skills along the way.

I have a particular obsession with sock knitting and sock design, creating collections inspired by fantasy lands. My Socks of Oz, Narnia, Wonderland, and Wonka are just the beginning. Come join me on this knitting adventure. Letā€™s create something magical together!

Pat Hensley

Ravelry Name:

Pattern Store:

Designer Bio:

Pat Hensley is a retired special education teacher who taught for over 30 years. Now she teaches Special Education courses at Furman University to preservice teachers and teachers getting their Masterā€™s degree in Special Education. After retiring from public school teaching, Pat began crocheting and knitting before finally taking up spinning. Pat started designing socks when she couldnā€™t find a pattern that fit her necessary stitch count. She wanted to make designs that would adapt to a variety of stitch counts. After socks, she was intrigued by different shawl construction and so she designed some shawls. Next, cowls became a challenge so the latest cowl design involved color work which she thoroughly enjoyed and hopes to design more patterns involving color work.

Designer Showcase Replay:

There is no recording of Pat's showcase and her IG account is private but feel free to send her a request. Her patterns are lovely & she's wonderful to chat with. ^_^

Mary Hull

Ravelry Name:

Designer Bio:

Mary Hull is the designer and podcaster behind Kino Knits. Think interesting stitches, unique constructions, off-the-beaten path destinationsā€¦ I take my role as your knitting guide very seriously. All patterns are meticulously drafted, tech edited, and test knit so you can be sure your path is clear.

I also believe that collaboration is better than competition, which is why I started the Point/Counterpoint series, now on volume 5, and that you should be able to get good value out of your yarn, which is why I have so many patterns designed for flexible yardage.

In short, my mission is to help process knitters create beautiful products. Letā€™s go!

Megan Williams

Ravelry Name:

Pattern Store:

Designer Bio:

For me, knitting is so much more than just a fiber art, needle craft, or hobby. It is a shared interest that connects me with countless other wonderful people, and the starting point to so many dear friendships. Over the years, as I grew more particular about my finished objects, I began modifying and changing them, and fell in love with the mathematics involved with designing knitwear. I strive to make my designs simple, yet visually interesting, and to make the process of knitting them enjoyable. I love seeing happy knitters, who are proud of what they created. Join me on my knitting adventures at justrunknit.com

Designer Showcase Replay:

There is no recording of Megan's showcase but it was so much fun! You can see her in action chatting with designers in some of the other replay videos & get to know her through IG.

She's also the co-host of Zombieknitpocalypse & along with Amy puts in a ton of time and energy to make sure that 200 knitters can have an amazing 5 days of hanging out with fellow crafters, making, learning and sharing.

I just love her & am in awe of everything that she accomplishes. Her designs are fun & wearable, she's so supportive and caring, and I am so happy (& lucky) to call her my friend.

Jude Melvin

Ravelry Name:

Pattern Store:

Designer Bio:

Iā€™m an aspiring Mortician thatā€™s been crafting as a form of mindfulness and stress relief since I was 8 (or 9 not quite sure). When Iā€™m not poking dead things with a stick I enjoy a plethora of nerdy things, like reading all of Tolkienā€™s works, learning everything I can about Norse Mythology, and rocking out to David Bowie or Dead or Alive. Iā€™m also one half of the KnerdGirl Knits podcast, with my mom Geknitics.

Designer Showcase Replay:

There is no recording of Jude's live event but it was really great to meet him & geek out over all the Tolkein, Bowie, & Once Upon a Time references he uses as inspiration for sock designs. His IG account is private, but you can find all his patterns in this Ravelry shop (linked above).

Janis Ficker

Ravelry Name:

Pattern Store:

Designer Bio:

After spending Undergrad and Grad School at the Savannah College of Art and Design, Janis found her job wasnā€™t as creative as she thought it would be. After a few failed attempts to find a creative outlet, knitting became her drug of choice. In 2008 she left her ā€œreal jobā€ and started working with a network marketing company. This allowed her a lot of free time which she naturally filled with knitting, then a podcast - the Carolina Fiber Girls, a bit of designing and most recently co-owning Queen City Yarns with her friend Christen.

Janis lives in Charlotte, with her husband Brian and their two black cats. You can find her in all of the places as JanisFicker and www.queencityyarn.com

Designer Showcase Replay:

There is no recording of Janis's showcase but since she's also 1/2 of Queen City Yarn I thought I'd share their behind the scenes shot so you can check out the gorgeous virtual yarn booth they set-up for ZK2020@home:
