Hello!
Today's tutorial will teach you how to Knit a Smocked Stitch. This stitch can seem fiddley at first but it's very easy to develop a rhythm while working it & the finished look is really pretty.
The smocked stitch that I'm showing you today is done over 5 stitches, with 2 wraps and stays in-pattern, but you can do it over as many or as few stitches as you like, with as many wraps as you want, and work in whatever stitches you like (or that your pattern calls for). Just keep in mind that the smocks will suck in your fabric and can significantly alter the drape and gauge of your finished project.
You can make this stitch with a cable needle, but I'm showing you the way I do it because it's what I like. There's really no great difference between the two methods, I just don't like stopping the flow of my knitting to fuss around with a cable needle. It's your knitting so pick the method that you like best & have fun!

Supplies:
Knitting project with stitches live on the needles
Knitting Needles appropriate to the yarn
Step 1:
Work in pattern to the 5 stitches you will be working the Smocked Stitch over.
Step 2:
With the yarn held to the back, slip 5 stitches purlwise (as if you're purling them) onto the right needle.
Step 3:
Bring the yarn to the front between the two needles.
Step 4:
Slip the 5 stitches back to the left needle.
Step 5:
Bring the yarn to the back between the two needles.
Step 6:
Repeat steps 2 - 5 once.
Step 7:
Work in-pattern across all 5 stitches.
Continuation:
Continue in-pattern until it is time to work another Smocked Stitch. Work steps 2-7 every time you want to work a Smocked Stitch.
That's it!
Now you can easily add a Smocked Stitch pattern to any project you choose!
