Lesson 7: Practice Projects

Why Combine Stitches?

Combining knit and purl stitches is the foundation of many knitting patterns. It adds texture, depth, and variety to your projects, making them visually interesting and uniquely yours. Whether you’re working on a scarf, hat, or blanket, understanding how to mix these stitches will enhance your knitting skills.

Materials You’ll Need

  • Yarn: Continue with your medium-weight yarn (worsted weight).

  • Needles: Use the same size 8 (5mm) needles you used for casting on.

Exploring Simple Patterns

Let’s start with a classic pattern that combines knit and purl stitches: the Garter Stitch and the Stockinette Stitch. These are fundamental building blocks for many other patterns.

Garter Stitch:

  • How to Knit It: Knit every row.

  • What It Looks Like: A fabric with a bumpy texture on both sides.

Stockinette Stitch:

  • How to Knit It: Alternate between knitting one row and purling the next.

  • What It Looks Like: A smooth side with a bumpy side.

Tips for Combining Stitches

Keep Your Tension Even: Consistent tension ensures your fabric looks neat and uniform.

Count Your Rows: Use a row counter or mark your rows to keep track of your pattern.

Practice Swatches: Make small swatches to experiment with different stitch combinations before starting a big project.

Your First Project: Adding Texture to Your Simple Scarf

Now that you know how to combine stitches, let’s add some texture to our scarf. Here’s how to proceed:

  1. Row 1: Knit 1, Purl 1 across the row.

  2. Row 2: Purl 1, Knit 1 across the row.

  3. Repeat Pattern: Continue repeating rows 1 & 2 for 20 rows total. (You will have 10 pattern repeats in your fabric.) This textured fabric created by this combination of alternating knit and purl stitches is known as seed stitch.

  4. Continuing On: Repeat the Simple Scarf sections from Days 3, 4, and 5 in any order you like until your scarf is as long as you want. Traditionally, a full length scarf would be as long as the wearer is tall, but this is a simple scarf that is intended more as a cute accessory so try it on as you go and stop when it's the length you desire.

Conclusion

Congratulations, you’ve mastered combining stitches! This opens up endless possibilities for your knitting projects. Tomorrow, we’ll explore Binding Off, getting those stitches off the needles.

Stay tuned for Day 6: Binding Off - How to finish your project neatly.
