Lesson 7: Practice Projects

What is Binding Off?

Binding off, also known as casting off, is the method used to finish your knitting project. It involves closing the stitches on your needle so that they don’t come undone. This technique creates a clean, sturdy edge that’s perfect for scarves, hats, blankets, and more.

Materials You’ll Need

  • Yarn: Continue with your medium-weight yarn (worsted weight).

  • Needles: Use the same size 8 (5mm) needles you used for casting on.

  • Scissors: Any pair will do as long as they can cut the yarn you're working with.

  • Yarn Needle: Make sure the eye (hole) is big enough to hold your yarn.

Step-by-Step Guide to Binding Off

Step 1:

Knit the first two stitches on your left needle as usual.

Step 2:

Use your left needle to lift the first stitch over the second stitch and off the needle.

Step 3:

Knit the next stitch on the left needle.

Step 4:

Repeat Steps 2-3 across the row until you have only one stitch left on your right needle.

Step 5:

Cut the yarn, leaving a tail about 6 inches long.

Step 6:

Thread the yarn tail through the last stitch and pull tight to secure it.

Step 7:

Use a yarn needle to weave in the loose ends on the wrong side of your project.

Tips for Success

Keep Tension Even: Make sure your stitches are neither too tight nor too loose to avoid a ruffled edge.

Practice on a Swatch: If you’re new to binding off, practice on a small swatch before finishing your project.

Use the Right Amount of Yarn: Ensure you have enough yarn to bind off without running out. A good rule of thumb is to measure out 3x the width of your pattern.
