Hello!
Making a Magic Ring for your crochet projects is a great way to start if you're wanting to avoid a large-ish hole at the center of your square, toy or whatever else you happen to be making. Because you're working into a ring of yarn instead of a chain that's been joined (or even just into a single chain), you can tighten the center after you have your first row of stitches completed. This eliminates any gaps and creates a nice, tight closure.
I've used a round of single crochets in my example below, but follow your pattern for what type of stitch you should be making when working this technique into a pattern.
I hope you're having a wonderful week,
Happy hooking!

Crochet a Magic Ring Tutorial:
Step 1: Wrap yarn twice around indec & middle finger. The ball-end will be towards your palm & the tail will be at your fingertips.
Step 2: Grasp the part of the loop where the yarn overlaps with your forefinger & thumb.
Note: In the next few images I've adjusted my fingers so that it's easier to see what is happening with the yarn & hook. Keeping a grasp on the spot indicated in Step 2 will help you in making your magic ring.
Step 3: Insert hook into loop from front to back.
Step 4: Yarn over & pull through loop.
Step 5: Chain 1.
Step 6: Insert hook into loop from front to back again.
Step 7: Yarn over, pull yarn through loop. 2 loops on hook.
Step 8: Yarn over & pull through both loops on hook. 1 single crochet made.
Step 9: Repeat steps 6-8 for the amount of single crochets called for in pattern.
Step 10: Lightly tug on the tail to see which strand in the ring will tighten first. Don't pull tight!
Step 11: Pulling on the strand that you noted in the last step, tighten the ring as much as you can.
Step 12: Pulling on the tail this time, tighten the ring completely. You should have a completely closed ring of single crochet stitches. Continue on as indicated in pattern.
Try It Out!
It's best to put a new technique into practice right away so that you can remember it in the future. Here are some of my patterns that feature a Crocheted Magic Ring:
