This month's kit from Club Yumi features lovely, local Icelandic Wool from Lydias Flock worked up into a matching hat & mitts colorwork set! The kit includes 2 full skeins of Lydia's Light Lopi yarn in the Moorit & White colorways. Plenty of yarn for you to make a set for yourself & an extra set of mitts for a friend. The patterns offer sizing from Toddler through Adult Large so you can even get a jump on some holiday knitting if you're up to it!
Isolde & Butterscotch are named for the beautiful sheep from Lydia’s Flock that provided the Icelandic Wool used to make the original hat & mitts set. They are playful and fun & feature slip-stitch colorwork, simple ribbing and a slip-stitch texture pattern. Because of the frequent pattern changes, this set is a very addictive knit and the large range of sizes means that you can make a set for the whole family!
Familiarize yourself with the patterns & techniques by making the Butterscotch Hat first then progress to a set of slightly more tricky Isolde Mitts. There are charted and written instructions for both patterns and to keep things easier to manage, I’ve split the design into two files, one for the mitts and another for the hat.
Snuggly and warm for days spent outside when the air is getting crisp, the Butterscotch Hat is the perfect project as we head into Autumn. It features a folded brim done in simple 2x1 ribbing, a bit of texture in a horizontal slip-stitch pattern and it ends with a lovely intro to slip-stitch colorwork (aka: mosaic knitting). Using this technique, you’ll only knit with one color at a time but the end result will be stunning. In no time, you’ll be pulling this hat over your ears as you venture outside to rake up leaves or enjoy a stroll with your family & friends.
The Isolde Mitts are intended to be a bit shorter when the cuff is rolled up, but if you need a bit more warmth all you need to do is roll them down and they are instantly twice as long. Since this wool is so lovely and warm, I prefer a shorter mitt but I know that this isn’t everyone’s preference so now you have options. You’ll be amazed at how quickly these mitts speed off your needles, perfect for last minute gifts or for a quick Fall accessory for yourself!
Here's some background information from LydiasFlock.com:
"At Lydia's Flock, we believe in complete transparency and traceability in all the products we offer to our community for sale. We are proponents of the "Slow Fashion" movement, which includes local, short supply chains and production of what Fibershed refers to as "climate beneficial wool".You can find our farm listed in the Producer Directory of our local Fibershed affiliate, Three Rivers Fibershed."
"Every item listed in our online farm store is grown and raised on our farm in East Central Minnesota. All our raw Shetland fiber is processed into yarn and roving at Rach-Al-Paca Fiber Mill in Hastings, MN. Because of the long staple length of Icelandic fleece, we currently use a small fiber mill in Northern Illinois in order to continue offering Icelandic yarn in small batches, individual to each sheep's fleece, as well as Lopi in various weights. Our pelts are tanned in Northern Minnesota."
